WhatsApp launches live location sharing

On October 18, 2017, the giant social media site WhatsApp launched live location sharing.

  • For a defined window of time, a user can choose to allow a contact or a group trace their location or movement on a map in real time.
  • This is different from the current “share location” feature, which shares a static location.
  • Anyone would be able to share live location for a pre-defined period of 15 minutes, one hour, or eight hours.
  • The sender can discontinue by clicking a button that says “Stop sharing”.
  • The recipient will see a card-like message with the option to “view live location” while the sender will see a button that says “Stop sharing” in red.
  • However, like the static location, live location will also only be visible to the contacts or groups one chooses to share it with.
  • According to a data of February 2017, there are 200 million monthly active users of WhatsApp in India.
  • At present, WhatsApp is the largest social media site in India.
