October 27: Infantry Day

Every year, Indian Army celebrates the Infantry Day on October 27. This year, Indian Army observed its 70th Infantry Day.

  • On October 27, 1947, an Infantry Company of the Sikh Regiment as a first Battalion was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribals who were earlier supported by Pakistan Army.
  • Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in India signed the Instrument of Accession acceding Jammu Kashmir to India.
  • And, then-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru ordered for such action.
