  • In 1999, the Kargil War was fought between India and Pakistan in Kargil (Ladakh).
  • With 200,000 Indian troops, the Government of India launched ‘Operation Vijay’ to clear the Kargil sector of Pakistani soldiers on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC).
  • The Indian Army had taken control of posts across the Himalayas on July 26, 1999.
  • At that moment, the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced ‘Operation Vijay’ successful on July 14 but it was officially announced on July 26, 1999.
